Language Development

”The limits of my language are the limits of my world.”

Ludwig Wittgenstein

The foundation of language development in children is established during early schools years. This is the time when they start learning more difficult aspects of language. From conquering phonology to using complex sentences and building robust vocabularies, children start understanding and using the subtleties of language during these years. They not only learn new words but their conversation is also more detailed. It is the perfect time for developing their language skills and introducing them to new words that they can use in the future.

ileap’s after-school program is focused on providing receptive as well as expressive aspects of language to the students. We mainly focus on four key areas including, listening, speaking, reading and writing. The program helps students develop strong comprehension and composition skills that directly impact a student’s academic performance. Learning at ileap is process driven and the modules are developed, evolved and customized as per the students/board requirements.

Reading comprehension is very important for a student’s academic achievement. Strong comprehension skill ensures success in all subject areas. It is a pre-requisite for acquiring knowledge and expressing opinions and ideas. Comprehension is a powerful skill because it helps children construct meanings in their mind while reading.

ileap program encourages students to read, evaluate, analyze, make judgments, differentiate between facts and opinions, extend and predict. These skills are refined, practiced and reinforced continually throughout the course period. We make use of effective strategies to help the students connect background knowledge to the text, questioning the text, drawing inferences, identifying the key points/main idea, creating mental images and synthesizing the information.

There is a strong, unequivocal relation between comprehension skills and a good vocabulary. At ileap, we conduct activities that encourage students to connect new vocabulary to prior knowledge, use the word in reading, writing and discussions. Worksheets on synonyms, antonyms and word definitions are also created to help them enhance their vocabulary. We make the students read a rich variety of text to make them learn new words and their correct usage.

Grammar is an important tool for writing, a tool that can help enhance creativity. Grammar is not only an aid for learning but it is also interesting and worth knowing. Students require a good understanding of sentence style and structure in order to excel at tests and writing assignments. To help students read and write in a better manner, ileap aims to maintain a balance between ‘rule driven learning’ and ‘grammar and usage’ - functional learning. We encourage the students to do extensive reading because it helps improve grammar to a great extent.

It is important for students to learn effective reading and writing skills. They need to understand the process of writing and also learn about different writing practices. Students at ileap get to explore a variety of formats and genres in composition. Our teaching strategies include discussions, organizing thoughts in a sequential manner on graphic organizers, pictures and experiences to stimulate discussions. We have involved modeled writing, shared writing, guided writing and independent writing. Our aim is to help the students learn the art of writing narrative passages, stories, descriptive passages, essays, research reports and much more.
